If you follow me on Instagram (and if you don’t, you should!) you know that I love a good lip color. Thanks to the many makeup artists and beauty bloggers I follow, I have been introduced to a whole new world of amazing lip color!
Evidence of the madness!
Why lip color? Well, I can’t really get into eye makeup. First of all, I have crazy sensitive eyes. Allergies affect my eyes first, so I spend a lot of time with itchy, burning, watery eyes; not very conducive to eye makeup. Second, I wear glasses and I HATE contacts. So that means it’s super hard to see my eyes while I’m trying to do the makeup…… and then you can’t really see it behind my glasses anyway! So I’ll wear some eyeliner and maybe mascara if I want to be really fancy, but for the most part, I keep my eyes super simple.
I’ve been getting a ton of questions (and compliments!) lately on my lip colors – y’all are so sweet! I’ve also gotten a few questions about where I get my lip colors, how do I wear them, and how do I keep them looking so good. Here are my favorite brands, colors, tips, and tricks.
Exfoliate your lips! I know it sounds weird, but nothing messes up a good lip color application like dry or flaky lips. You can do the DIY route and rub your toothbrush on them, or you can purchase a good lip exfoliator. I like the ELF Lip Exfoliator because it’s cheap and easy to apply. I love cheap and easy!
Next, prime your lips. Say it with me friends; PRIME YOUR LIPS. You can go all out and buy a lip primer like MAC Prep and Prime (seriously, it is magical) but you can also just use a good, nourishing lip balm. Primer is easier because you can put the lip color right over it, no extra wait time or steps. If you use balm, put it on at the beginning of your makeup/hair routine so it has time to sink in. When you are ready to apply your lip color, wipe off the excess with a cotton pad. It works really well, and it does what a primer does; gets your lip ready for color application.
To Line, Or Not To Line?
That, my friends, is the question. A lot of people swear by a lip liner, and it has a lot of great properties. You can use it to overline your lips to give yourself a bit more fullness, and it also helps your lip color stay in place and really lock into your lips. Others feel like it’s a waste of step, and that it can be tricky to match liner to lip color. Personally, I have a rule; the brighter the color, the more I need a liner. Lighter or more neutral colors have more wiggle room for error. Make a mistake with a super bright color and you look like a clown. So when I wear a bright pink or red, or a super dark, vampy color, I start with a lip liner. If you have issues with matching colors but still want to use a liner, you can always try an invisible liner, like this one from Rimmel. It gives you the barrier and extra grip of a liner without the color issues.
Choosing A Color
There are a huge variety of lip colors out there, and just choosing a type can be overwhelming. I’m not going into the millions of options; I’ll just tell you what I love.
I <3 This Lippie – Matte Lippie Stix
More Better – Ultra Matte Lip
This brand has gotten crazy popular thanks to a massive Instagram following. Their prices are very affordable, and they have a variety of types. My favorites are the Lippie Stix, and the Ultra Matte Lips. (Note: I am a big fan of matte over shine. That’s why lip care is super important. Matte looks awesome but can be really drying.)
Masochist – Velour Liquid Lipstick
Anyone who loves makeup loves Jeffree Star. I’m not exaggerating either; his Velour Liquid Lipstick has set the standard for matte liquid lipstick. It’s a little more expensive, but it is totally worth it. Of all the liquid lipsticks I own, his feel the best on my lips and have AMAZING staying power. If you want to purchase some of his colors (and you probably will) they sell out as soon as they are restocked. So follow the company on Instagram to find out when colors will be restocked. They are definitely worth it!
Prague – Soft Matte Lip Cream
This drugstore brand is pretty much the be-all-end-all of impulse buys, and boy am I glad I tried it! Their Soft Matte Lip Cream defies explanation. It dries to a matte finish, feels really good on, and stays put for at least 4-6 hours. Plus, the range of colors is AMAZING. I also have one of their Simply Vamp Lip Creams, and the color is so dramatic, I love it. They have a million different products I want to try (Ombre Lip Duo, Slide On Lip Pencil, Lip Lingerie, and Full Throttle Lipstick just to name a few) and the fact that they are all under $10 is very helpful for my beauty budget!
So there is a mini intro to my wild world of lip color! Share your favorites in the comments, or feel free to ask me any other beauty questions you have. I’m also thinking of doing a skincare post…….
